Dear Members & Friends of the Italian Cultural Center,

The Italian Cultural Center of Minneapolis / St. Paul, in partnership with MSP Film Society, is thrilled to bring the best of Italian cinema to Minnesota. The 12th Italian Film Festival of Minneapolis / St. Paul (IFF) returns with eleven films never before seen in Minnesota, including four U.S. premieres. From Thursday, February 25 through Thursday, March 4, this year’s all online festival offers an exciting lineup of comedies, dramas and documentaries that will take viewers on a sensational journey through the landscapes and stories of Italy and its people.

As much as we will miss seeing our friends and audience members in person over some “vino”, we are thrilled for the opportunity to reach Minnesotans across the State  for the first time. Surely, our live film discussions with directors and film professionals, will nurture the warm sense of community you have helped us create over the years.

This year, IFF is particularly honored to bring the works of three Italian women to Minnesota. We are proud to remember Valentina Pedicini (acclaimed yet still largely unknown filmmaker who died prematurely at the end of 2020) with Faith and Dal profondo (From the Depths), two documentaries of rare power and beauty. iSOLA by Elisa Fuksas, in which the director captures her personal struggles as a cancer patient in a locked down COVID-19 Rome, and Agalma, a poetic look at Naples National Archeological Museum by Doriana Monaco round up this symphony of female voices. Three of the four documentaries are U.S. premieres.

A modern-day paragon of (neo)realism denouncing societal and human failures in Southern Italy, Una Promessa, by the up-and-coming twin brother duo Gianluca and Massimo De Serio, is also a U.S. premiere.

IFF 2021also brings heartwarming stories of love, hope and friendship to Minnesota. Opening the festival on Feb. 25th is the film Gli anni più belli (The Best Years), a moving and exhilarating portrait of a generation by internationally acclaimed director Gabriele Muccino. Cosa Sarà by Francesco Bruni, Lacci by Daniele Luchetti and Il grande passo by Antonio Padovan will offer three very different takes on the Italian family. Odio l’estate with Italy’s favorite comedic trio of Aldo Giovanni and Giacomo will make us laugh out loud and dream of vacationing on the Italian seashore.

Ten years after his death, we celebrate Italy’s maestro of commedia all’Italiana: Mario Monicelli. Anna Magnani and Toto’ star in his comedic gem Risate di Gioia.

Check out the detailed list of films, events and Q&As below including the Virtual Talk Series on Italian Film History presented by Prof. Federico Pacchioni and starting on February 13th.

We are committed to our local community and the festival offers an opportunity to give back by creating dialogue between Minnesota and Italy through visual arts. In order to continue doing this important work, we rely on the support of our community partners and sponsors. Your support makes the festival possible, as sponsorships help us cover the event’s many costs including screening fees, speaker's fees, and community outreach.
