Two circus performers living in a trailer park on the outskirts of Rome discover a child standing alone in the rain. When they bring her home, they discover a note; the toddler will be picked up in due course by her troubled mother. The couple however hope to keep the child.

Preparations are under way at the Recchi villa for a sumptuous birthday luncheon honoring paterfamilias Edoardo Sr. At the table are Edoardo's wife Allegra, their son Tancredi, his Russian-born wife Emma, and their three young adult children. Edoardo Sr. announces that he is passing on leadership of the business to the next generation. The men become embroiled in difficult decisions that will affect the family's time-honored traditions.
